Area Deprivation Index Contributes to the Association of Race with Severe Maternal Morbidity

Recent studies demonstrate increasing rates of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) as well disproportionate frequencies amongst racial minorities, with black women consistently having the highest proportion SMM. Area deprivation index (ADI), a nationally used composite measure neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, is associated multimorbidity including adverse pregnancy outcomes. We sought to explore relationship between ADI and SMM describe how accounting for impacts race performed retrospective cohort analysis delivery admissions in single healthcare network from 2015 2019. Logistic regression was assess Multivariable logistic estimate effect on index, which measures census variables describing disadvantage income, education, household characteristics, housing. The ranges 1 100 higher values disadvantage. Of 63,208 our cohort, unadjusted incidence 2.4%. significantly conferring risk (Figure 1, p < 0.001). For each 10 unit increase ADI, increased by 8%. Black had (3.3%) average (86 ± 17). In multivariable model, association attenuated when controlling (p 0.001, Table 1).
